23rd Annual East Texas What-A-Melon Festival

Center- The 23rd Annual What-A-Melon Festival begins this Thursday, July 12, on the Center Square. Every year the festival draws 5,000+ visitors to Center who enjoy carnival rides, games, contests including The Biggest Watermelon Contest, food, craft & merchandise booths, live music & entertainment under the Big Tent, The Pink ‘N Green Pet Contest and The Annual Miss East Texas What-A-Melon Pageant. This is a fun, family-oriented good ol’time!

The 2012 What-A-Melon Festival Pageant will be held Saturday, July 14, under the big tent on the downtown square and a new What-A-Melon Queen will be crowned. Girls 0-16 years and boys 0-5, years will compete in their best What-A-Melon or summer attire.

New this year is the What-A-Melon Crawl. Adults and children can sign up today to be a part of the Center What-A-Melon Crawl 5K/One mile run and walk.  The What-A-Melon Crawl will be held on the final day of the What-A-Melon festival and proceeds from the Crawl will benefit the Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center.

The race will begin at 7 a.m., Saturday, July 14, starting and ending on the historic Shelby County square.  The run will take you down several of the scenic streets and around the downtown square in Center.

Adult participants can choose from four categories including the 5K run, a one mile run, a 5K walk, or a one mile walk.  Packets can be picked up at All Hours Fitness Gym located at 122 Austin Street on the square from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 13, or at 6 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14. Brunch and/or snacks will be located in front of Any Time Fitness gym at 639 Hurst Street, before and after the race. Water will be available at each mile maker.

Participants in the Crawl are asked to register early. The first 150 registered participants are guaranteed a tee shirt. Entry fees are $15 for one mile and $25 for the 5K. A $5 additional fee will be applied for entries not received by the deadline of July 12, or on race day.
