Call To Arms

Jefferson – Since Jefferson played a key role in the Trans-Mississippi Department’s military/industrial complex, Jefferson is a natural location for hosting a Civil War Symposium during the current Civil War Sesquicentennial on Saturday, August 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The symposium will feature four speakers who are experts on Civil War history or Jefferson’s Civil War legacy. Richard McCaslin, Ph.D., is a professor and Chair of the Department of History at UNT and will discuss the Union’s efforts to invade East Texas in 1862-63. Jack Waugh, a noted journalist and historian from Fort worth, will speak on General Sam Bell Maxey and the war in the Indian Territory. John Nance, a local Jefferson historian, will cover Jefferson’s Reconstruction days and cast of characters. Mitchel Whittington, a Jefferson author, will discuss the history of Jefferson during and after the war.

The program includes a luncheon with the symposium speakers at the Excelsior House which will include a gourmet buffet lunch. James Henry Davis, author of several books on Texas Civil War units, will be the after lunch speaker.

Vendors and exhibitors will be present at the symposium and there will be ample time in the schedule for viewing. The symposium registrants will also be able to visit the Museum as part of their registration.

Cost of the symposium is $40.00 per person and cost of the luncheon with the speakers is $25.00. The luncheon is limited to 50 registrants. For information on registration, contact the Museum at 903-665-2775. www.jeffersonmuseum.com

All proceeds of the symposium will go to the Jefferson Historical Society and Museum, a not-for profit 501 (c) 3 entity, for operation and maintenance of the Museum.
