Mission Tejas State Park Kicks Off Summer with New Trail System

WECHES- Mission Tejas State Park is getting ready to kick off the summer with a bang! June 1st will be the grand opening of the park’s new trail system and guided hike. These trails will be “foot traffic” only, however, the park hopes to be able to open equestrian trails in the future. Liberty Hall Presents “Bernie”

Special Guests, Carthage’s District Attorney Danny Buck Davidson, and Kay Baby Epperson, a Carthage Citizen Who Appears in the Film Will Be Present

TYLER- This Thursday, May 23 Liberty Hall in Tyler will show the East Texas inspired movie  “Bernie,” directed by Richard Linklater. In the film Bernie Tiede, played by Jack Black, a chubby undertaker, is someone who takes pride in his work. In a series of interviews with townspeople, mixed with flashbacks, follow Bernie as he moves to the small East Texas town of Carthage, where old ladies adore him. There he befriends a wealthy, yet mean-spirited widow named Marjorie Nugent, played by Shirley MacLaine. The two become close companions in both daily routines and expensive vacations. As time goes by Marjorie changes from sour and alone to happy with Bernie; then she gets extremely possessive. What will sweet Bernie do? Continue reading

77th Annual World Championship Fiddlers Festival

CROCKETT- The 77th Annual World Championship Fiddlers Festival is on Saturday, June 8th at the Crockett Civic Center, 1100 Edmiston in Crockett, Texas. Crockett’s most traditional event, The Fiddlers Festival, began in 1936 on the courthouse square in downtown Crockett, later moving to the city park, and finally to the Crockett Civic Center. Enjoy world champion fiddlers at all age levels compete for the 77th title. Port Jefferson River Project

JEFFERSON- The City of Jefferson is working with Stephen F Austin State University’s Center for Regional Heritage Research on the Port Jefferson riverfront project. Currently Dr. Kelley Snowden, Professor of Historical Geography, Tourism Director Jeff Campbell and Gary Endsley of the Collins Academy are developing the interpretive panels that will be placed throughout the park. Jefferson Train Days

JEFFERSON- The Jefferson Historical Society and Museum will celebrate the one year anniversary of constructing a replica early 1900′s T & P Railroad depot on the Museum property to house the R.D. Moses T & P Model Railroad. Construction of the depot building began in late January 2012 and was completed in early May 2012. The inaugural Jefferson Train Days event on May19-20, 2012 celebrated the Grand Opening of the R.D. Moses T & P Model Railroad at the Museum.

59th Performance of the Diamond Bessie Murder Trial a Success

JEFFERSON- This year marked the 59th year of the performance Diamond Bessie Murder Trial written by Mrs. Lawton Riley. Over the weekend locals performed the trial re-enactment at the Historic Jefferson Playhouse. Every year most of the same citizens of Jefferson perform in the murder trial, with some having performed in the trial for over 20 years.

Jefferson’s Civil War History

JEFFERSON- In the Steamboat days, when Jefferson was a trading partner with New Orleans and Shreveport, Jefferson was a strategic outpost during the Civil War. On Big Cypress Bayou, just east of downtown, the Confederate Army established an ordnance works. The ordnance works consisted of three powder magazines (only one is still standing), barracks, a warehouse and other out buildings.

Ammunition that was manufactured in Marshall and other Texas cities was brought to Jefferson, stored at the ordnance works and then transferred east to be used in battle. The ordnance works was built away from downtown in case there were any accidental explosions. Continue reading

Living History of Oak Grove Cemetery

NACOGDOCHES- On Saturday, May 4, 2013, the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. and the City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department will host the 1st annual Living History of Oak Grove Cemetery Tour. Oak Grove Cemetery was first established circa 1837, and it was later designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery by the Texas Historical Commission. Among those buried there are soldiers, four signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a number of local citizens, all of whom helped shape East Texas. Continue reading

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens Hooks a Top Spot on the “Best of Texas” List

The popular Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, Texas is on the latest “Best of Texas” list compiled by Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine.

ATHENS, TX – For years, the City of Athens, Texas has attracted fishing enthusiasts to its many freshwater fishing sites. Now Athens is being recognized by Texas Parks and Wildlife for its Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. The magazine calls the center the best place in Texas to “play catch”.

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center maintains a 1.2 acre stocked fishing pond where children are taught how to bait a hook and cast a line. As Texas Parks and Wildlife says, “Many young anglers catch their first fish at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens.” Bait and tackle are furnished for visitors and no fishing license is required.
