The Davy Crockett National Forest, named for the legendary pioneer, contains more than 160,000 acres of East Texas woodlands, streams, recreation areas, and wildlife habitat. Located in Houston and Trinity Counties, the forest is centrally located within the Neches and Trinity River basins. The ranger district office is located near Ratcliff on Highway 7 about one-quarter mile west of FM 227 in Houston County. Continue reading

Village Creek State Park is composed of 1,090 heavily forested acres, located in Hardin County, near Lumberton, just 10 miles south of Beaumont. The park property was acquired in 1979, but did not open to the public until 1994. The park is named for a free flowing stream which rises near the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation. The stream winds 69 miles southeasterly where it connects to the Neches River. Continue reading

Tyler State Park is composed of 985.5 acres in Smith County, just north of Tyler, and encompasses a 64 acre lake. The park property was acquired in 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) made the original improvements to the park, and opened to the public in 1939. Continue reading

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park was known as Dam B State Park until 1965. The park is a 705 acre area in Jasper and Tyler counties, located between Woodville and Jasper on the 15,000 acre B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir. The property was acquired under a 50-year lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1964 and opened to the public in 1965. Continue reading

Martin Creek Lake State Park is composed of 286.9 acres, located in Rusk County, southeast of Longview. The property was acquired in 1976, and opened to the public that same year. The park is located on the 5,000 acre Martin Creek Lake, which was constructed to provide cooling water for a lignite-fired, electric power generation plant. Continue reading

The property was acquired in 1984 and authorized through a 50 year lease agreement with the Sabine River Authority, which operates the 36,700 surface-acre reservoir and Iron Bridge Dam, on the headwaters of the Sabine River. Lake Livingston State Park is located one mile southwest of Livingston. The park is composed of 635.5 acres along the shores of Lake Livingston, an 84,800 acre reservoir. The park property was acquired in 1971 and was opened to the public in 1977. The park is near the ghost town of Swartwout, a steamboat landing on the Trinity River in the 1830s through the 1850s. Galveston Island State Park is a paradise located on the west end of Galveston Island. The park is within the Galveston city limits and in Galveston County. The park is composed of 2,013.1 beautiful acres overlooking both beach and bayside terrain. According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the site was acquired in 1969 from private owners under the State Parks Bond Program and was opened to the public in 1975. Fairfield Lake State Park is composed of 1,460 acres northeast of Fairfield in Freestone County, surrounding a 2,400 acre lake. The park was acquired in 1971 – 1972 by lease from Texas Utilities and was opened to the public in 1976. The population is sparsely scattered across the area, where Texas Utilities built its dam to create Fairfield Lake as a cooling system for its new power plant. Continue reading

Cooper Lake State Park

Cooper Lake State park is located in northeast Texas, on 3,026 acres surrounding the young 19,300 acre water body, Copper Lake. The park is composed of two units. Doctors Creek Unit is the smaller of the two, totaling 715.5 acres, and is located in Delta County. South Sulphur Unit lies in northern Hopkins County, and is 2,310.5 acres. Embankment on the South Sulphur River began in 1986. January 1996, the park property was acquired and by the fall of that year lake construction was complete. Continue reading

Caddo Lake State Park

Caddo Lake State Park is located on the only natural lake in the Lone Star State. The lake was eventually dammed in the early 1900s when oil was struck and for flood control. Caddo Indian legends tell of a giant flood that gave way to the formation of the lake. Some scientists believe the lake formed when a massive log jam on the Red River occurred, dumping flood waters into the Cypress Bayou. Others believe the lake may have been created after a strong earthquake caused the Red River to flood the bayou.

Atlanta State Park is located on Wright Patman Lake near Texarkana. Texas acquired this beautiful land in 1954.This 1,475 acre park is a charming, wooded park has a west-facing shoreline in Cass County, that allows visitors to take in brilliant and bright sunsets over the water. The seasonal colors of the terrain are always in transition, and the lake, sunsets, and pine forests are an amazing sight. Abundant bird and wildlife species and woodland plants offer excellent opportunities to observers and nature enthusiasts.
