Comedy Comes To The Texas Theatre
The cast of “Playing Doctor” has been rehearsing since the night after casting announcements were posted on the front doors of the Texas. That night, Director Jim Vincill and Assistant Director Glenn Barnhart held a read-through in the lobby and has been working hard ever since to bring yet another amazing performance to the stage of the Texas Theatre.
“Playing Doctor” is a wacky comedy full of zany farces. “Playing Doctor” has dusted off every old slapstick bit and hoary joke used in vaudeville. Authors Van Zandt and Milmore use classic farce situations to tell a frantic story full of mayhem. Farce and faking prove to be a hilarious combination that will surely have Texas Theatre audiences rolling in the isles in October!
“Playing Doctor” is a hilarious play about the art of deception. In the play Rob Brewster’s parents are extremely proud of their brilliant son, the doctor. What they don’t know is that Rob has used all the money they gave him for medical school to live on, as he has pursued his fledgling writing career.
Rob is living a lie and he would like to keep it that way. His day of reckoning comes when his parents announce they are stopping by his apartment for a visit. Rob chooses to continue his deception and devises a plan. He quickly enlists the help of his dim-witted secretary to be his nurse and his zany roommate Jimmy, who is a struggling actor, to round up his actor friends to pretend to be patients. Together the trio transforms his literary apartment into a makeshift doctor’s office.
The problem ensues when none of Jimmy’s friends show for their acting gig. Jimmy decides he is such a good actor that he can impersonate all the patients, with the help of a trunk of costumes and bad dialects!
The PCT cast works well together and navigates the many hokey twists with skill and charisma. Vincell directs with great pace and well-timed bits, which are blocked nicely. PCT is bound to produce a real crowd pleaser under the direction of Vincell and Barnhart!
