“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” Live at the Texas Theatre
Palestine- It is almost time to raise the curtain again at one of the oldest and most beautiful theatres in East Texas! Director Eric J. Cates of Palestine Ovation Theatre will present a local, homespun performance combined with talent of local actors and actresses and familiar rituals that bring communities together this holiday season at the Historic Texas Theatre in Downtown Palestine.
This December, Palestine Community Theatre will present “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” sponsored by Mary Alice Largent and Christie Marie Scroggins of Century 21 in Palestine.
Mrs. Bradley, (played by Amelia Cook), has bitten off more than she can chew. Mrs. Armstrong (played by Terri Warren), usually directs the church’s annual Christmas pageant, but this year she is confined to a hospital bed, with her leg awkwardly suspended in traction. So, Mrs. Bradley has agreed to take over her directorial duties.
Everything seems quite doable until Mrs. Bradley’s son, lets it slip to one of the Herdman children that they receive refreshments at church. That brings the Herdmans to the church where they proceed to hijack the annual Christmas pageant by taking over the leading roles.
All the kids are scared of the Herdman clan. The only safe place for them has been at church where the Herdmans wouldn’t be caught dead. Some say the Herdmans were the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars (even the girls!), swear, and hit little kids. No one was prepared when this outlaw family invaded church one Sunday looking for the snacks then decided to take over the annual Christmas pageant. None of the Herdmans had ever heard the Christmas story before and interpret it as an espionage story, where the wise men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating!
The Herdmans make waves the whole way, but also make this year’s pageant the most unusual anyone has ever seen, and quite possibly the best. Surprisingly, the Herdmans end up teaching the rest of the folks a bit about the real meaning of Christmas.
The play is perfect for kids and adults alike; it’s funny, touching and lightly sprinkled with classic Christmas songs. Written in 1972 for McCall’s magazine by Barbara Robinson, this play holds timeless appeal for the real meaning of Christmas. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” delivers everything a family could wish for this holiday season: multigenerational humor, enthusiastic performances, touching moments and a message of acceptance and understanding.
