Kid vs. The Neches- The Last Wild River in Texas

By Gage Concilio

A few weeks ago I took a journey to the Neches River with my dog Gus. He hates riding in the truck. Anyway, when we got there I put Gus on his leash, and as I opened the truck door, SWOOSH! He jumped out of the truck and ran down to the water. That was the first time I had ever seen Gus get in the water. He is usually scared of the water, especially rain.

I made him get out of the water so he wouldn’t become gator bait and we went for a little walk.

Next up on my journey was the first official launch of my blow up raft! I used an air pump and soon it was all blown up. I got into the boat and my mom gave me a push. Once I figured out how to control the raft I went fishing, but I didn’t catch anything.

I decided to park the raft and fish from the bank and even from the water.  Sometimes fishing takes a lot of patience, so I said, “Let the waiting game begin.”

So I waited and waited and waited. Finally, my cork went under! I yanked it and it was hooked, so I started to reel in my line. You will never guess what I found on my hook when I finally got it reeled in! It was a little snapping turtle! Just as I pulled him out of the water, all of the sudden I heard, “PLUNK!” The snapping turtle gone! The only catch of the day got away.  But I kept my hopes up.

We only had about an hour before sunset, so I got my perch pole and boarded my raft again. I put my bait on my hook and it was on like DONKEY KONG! I like to use pink and yellow power bait. It is easy to find at Wal-Mart and it always catches lots perch! Well, except on this occasion. My cork bobbed around a little but nothing would take the bait. Hey, you can catch em’ all, sometimes you just have to fish another day.

I saw a lot of cool stuff on my adventure. I saw several muscle shells, and lots of Spanish moss. All-in-all, it was a good trip.

It was getting dark so I packed up my gear and let the air out of my raft. I made sure to take everything we brought, including any trash. I always say, “If you pack it in-Pack it out! Do not litter!”

I hope you enjoyed my adventure on the Neches. Until next time… See you later, alligator!
