The Grinch: Locked Up!
PALESTINE- He’s Mean. He’s Green. He’s in Palestine! The Grinch has been locked up inside the Historic Anderson County Jail, and you can see his lair every weekend in December.
“The Grinch’s Lair is a fun, festive and family friendly experience. Guests get a personal tour with the Grinch through his jail house lair,” says Jeremy Janz, owner of the building.
“It’s been a rewarding experience watching children and adults laugh their way through the lair.”
The building’s lobby and second floor have been transformed into an imaginative stage for costumed characters.
“You can take photo’s with the Who’s, Max the Dog, and of course, The Grinch, himself,” say Janz. “It really is a lot of fun.”
Previous to this event, Mr. Janz and his family coordinated historic walking tours of the jail and surrounding area.
“The Grinch’s Lair is definitely our biggest event so far. A lot of hard work and creativity has gone into making this a magical holiday experience for our guests.”
The jail is a perfect playground for all ages. Frozen in time, the stairs, bars, doors, and long corridors lend themselves to peaking people’s curiosity.
“Transforming the jail to be something else is challenging. We’ve always seen the potential, but really feel as if we achieved it with this idea. Reactions from families have been priceless!” says Janz, who’s opening weekend was last week.
The Grinch’s Lair offers Whoville in the lobby with fun activities for the children. Also there is a trek up “Mt. Crumpit” to the Grinch’s Lair where The Grinch shows you through his home all around the second floor.
The Grinch’s Lair will be open every weekend in December at the Old Anderson County Jail. 704 Avenue A in Palestine on Fridays from 6pm-10pm, Saturdays 10pm-9pm, and on Sundays 1pm-9pm. Admission is $5 per person. Who-licious Hot Chocolate is offered for $1 a cup, and souvenir Grinch photos are $2 each. Personal photos are allowed and encouraged.
