Sam Houston Statue, Huntsville, Texas- The world’s tallest statue of an American Hero stands proudly beside I-45 in Huntsville, Texas. Sam Houston can be seen from an impressive distance as he oversees Texas traffic, day and night. Most East Texans have seen the statue, along with everyone else who has ever travelled south of Huntsville on the interstate. If you haven’t stopped to marvel the giant statue it is well worth the detour.
The statue was built as a tribute to the courage of Sam Houston, and was designed and constructed by artist David Adickes. Adickes dedicated the now famous statue to the City of Huntsville on October 22, 1994. The world’s tallest statue of a Texas statesman and American hero stands at 67 feet tall, on a 10 foot sunset granite base. The statue is located approximately 170 miles south of Dallas and about 70 miles north of his namesake city.
Sam Houston Statue, Huntsville, Texas- The massive Sam Houston statue is part of park, and includes the Huntsville Visitor Center. The Visitor Center offers a variety of information including unique videos, brochures, and maps. The center also has a souvenir gift shop filled with Texas treasures, collectibles, and memorabilia.
