Art Pop-up In Palestine Main Street District; Gallery Opens Friday

PALESTINE- An innovative gallery that will pop-up for one weekend featuring local and regional artists, and then disappear until Christmas, will debut Friday, July 26 at 112 W. Oak, in downtown Palestine with an opening reception from 4 – 6 p.m. Called the “Main Street Pop-up Gallery,” local artists have taken an unused space downtown and transformed it into a temporary art gallery.

Pop-up’s are a new concept in economic development to utilize open spaces and allow the temporary usage of the space. Art galleries, furniture boutiques, performance artists, specialty foods, and holiday stores have “popped up” all over the country.

“This is an out-of-the-box concept for us,” said Laura Westgate, Main Street Manager, “and everything just fell into place. The City is hosting ‘Christmas in July’ and local artists thought it was the perfect time. Every artist brings a specific energy to the space. It’s an exciting concept, a pop-up gallery, so we can bring together a diverse body of work and make it available to the public.”

There will be a wide array of art on display and for sale. The gallery will feature acrylic, oil, photography, watercolor, ceramic and mixed media. Art will range from abstract to realism and everything in between.

“I feel that everyone should be able to buy original art. Art is for everyone,” said artist committee chair John deBessonet, “With that in mind, I have created pieces that are high quality, but also affordable. I hope that someone will find a piece that speaks to them and be able to take it home.”

Artists displaying work will also be working the gallery each of the three days as part of their contribution.

The gallery will feature the works of:

  • John deBessonet, acrylic and mixed media
  • Deanna Frye, watercolor
  • Shirley Hiser, silhouette artist and pastels
  • Kris Holt, ceramic and acrylic
  • Lisa Rachel Horlander, acrylic and mixed media
  • Mildred Johnson, oil
  • Greg Laudadio, photography
  • Pearl Martin, oil
  • Dianne Masters-Hare, acrylic
  • Bea Mattox, acrylic
  • Martha Reed, acrylic
  • Beck Rowntree, mixed media and photography
