Charles Bright Visitor’s Center Dedication Set
NACOGDOCHES– The City of Nacogdoches, the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Nacogdoches Main Street Program are excited to honor a very special citizen this coming Friday, March 22nd at 9 a.m. In 2012 the Citizens Naming Committee made the recommendation to rename the Historic Town Center, home of the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau in honor of Mr. Bright. The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Pro Tem David Norton invite everyone to help us celebrate with an official ribbon cutting, in front of the building located at 200 E. Main Street.
Brief presentations by Dr. F.E. Abarnethy and Brian Holt Davis will be given about Mr. Bright’s considerable contributions to historic downtown Nacogdoches and specifically the Plaza Principal. Mr. Bright was instrumental in the revitalization of downtown and led a citizens group to have the old Post Office building converted into a Visitor’s Center more than fifteen years ago. Mr. Bright, Bright Coop and the Bright Foundation have made countless contributions to downtown over the last two decades through numerous beautification projects such as the antique light poles, planter boxes and most recently the Gateway Statue. Mr. Bright once flew a group of citizens to Austin in his private plane to present the City’s application to the Texas Main Street Program. His persistence, dedication and vision were crucial in the redevelopment of downtown. He could be seen personally placing bricks on the plaza, no task downtown was ever too small or too large for Mr. Bright.
“The Plaza Principal and the building that sits on it are a tribute to his vision. Thank you Mr. Bright for all that you have done for Nacogdoches,” said Main Street Director Sarah O’Brien, “even naming a building after him seems minuscule to the grandeur of tasks and accomplishments that he has been responsible for downtown.” March 22nd is Charles’ 86th Birthday. The City of Nacogdoches and the Nacogdoches Main Street Advisory Board invite everyone to join us for cake and refreshments after the ribbon cutting at City Hall, 202 E. Pilar Street.
