Pitcher Plant Trail

Pitcher Plant Trail
Warren, TX.

The short but captivating Pitcher Plant Trail is located in the Turkey Creek Unit of the Big Thicket Preserve. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible trail is predominantly composed of a boardwalk that elevates hikers a foot or so above a soggy wetland savannah. This savannah formed in a depression where a significant amount of rainwater accumulates. The water percolates down through the soil, taking with it the nutrients essential for healthy plant growth, also carrying small particles of clay. As the clay settles below the surface, it creates what is known as “hardpan,” an impenetrable surface that prevents groundwater from rising during dry periods and rainwater from seeping beyond the hardpan from above. As a consequence, a very specific type of growing condition is created.
