September 2013 Programs at Mission Tejas State Park

WECHES- Mission Tejas State Park will have outdoor fun on tap throughout the month of September! These events are informative and fun for the whole family. Get outside and enjoy beautiful East Texas!

Sept. 7, 2013:  Art in the Park: Painting and Drawing!

Inspiration from nature – a full day of art activities to encourage kids to examine the natural world from a new perspective.  Some art supplies will be supplied, but feel free to bring your own. This event will take place at the park pavilion. There will be 4 different activities, with a one hour break for lunch. 10am until 3pm.

Schedule of Activities:

 10:00am-11:00am: Art Framing Nature
 Participants will explore their surroundings, finding and framing their own natural art.

11:00am-12:00pm: Past, Present, Future
 We’ll discuss the history of the park, and draw how it might have looked hundreds of years ago, in the present, and in the future.

12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch Break
Lunch is NOT PROVIDED.  Please bring a picnic lunch.
1:00pm-2:00pm: Scavenged Art Assemblage
Scavenge for natural materials and create a piece of artwork.

2:00pm-3:00pm: Create a Critter
Using items found in the environment, we’ll create our own insects, birds and other animals.  

Sept. 14, 2013: Art in the Park: Nature Writing! Come and be inspired by nature! This day of writing activities will encourage kids to see the natural world in a whole new way.  Some supplies will be supplied, but feel free to bring your own. We will begin at the park pavilion. There will be 3 different activities, with a one hour break for lunch. 10am until 2pm

Schedule of Activities:

 10:00am-11:00am:Log Poem
Participants will work together to create a poem inspired by nature, built one word at a time, painted on rocks, and left assembled for future visitors to see.

11:00am-12:00pm: Nature Journaling
The group will be left to explore the area, observing everything around them. Assuming the role of “nature detective,” the participants will try to observe and write down everything they can discover about what they see, hear or touch.

12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch
 Lunch is NOT PROVIDED.  Please bring a picnic lunch.

1:00pm-2:00pm: Nature News
What is happening in the forest today? Participants will play the role of journalists and reporters, finding the top stories in the forest. Once that’s done, we’ll work together to create our own edition of the Nature News!

September 21, 2013: Art in the Park: Sights and Sounds!  Seeing and hearing nature – the natural way.  We will listen and see our natural world up close.  Meet at the pavilion at 10am. 10am until 2pm

Schedule of Activities:

 10:00am-10:30am: Sound Match
Mimic the music of nature in this fun partner game. Fun for all ages.

10:30am-1:00pm: Nature Photography Scavenger Hunt
After a brief introduction and orientation, participants will be given a scavenger hunt list and sent on their way. Visitors must provide their own digital camera. Remember to bring your picnic lunch.

1:00pm: Scavenger Hunt Finale
The groups will rendezvous at the park pavilion, and we’ll see who got the best photos.

September 28, 2013: Historic Sites Tour!  A walk through 300 years of Texas history, beginning at The Rice Home at 1pm, moving to the Mission and then on to El Camino Real.  Visitors are welcome to attend all or only one section of the tour.  Each section should take approximately 30-45 minutes.  The tour will end by 3pm.

All of our programs are free.  There is a $2.00 park entry fee for all 13 years & over.  Children 12 & under are free.  Be sure to ask in the office about our Park Passes – we have one that is just right for you!  We are located on Hwy 21 between Alto & Crockett.  Call 936-687-2394 with any questions.
