Treasure Hunting In Davey Dogwood Park

By Gage Concilio/Kid v.s. Wild ETX

This year I have decided to try my hand at treasure hunting with the help of my handy-dandy metal detector. Metal detectors can help you discover lost treasures because they are able to detect metal objects beneath the ground. I got my metal detector for Christmas last year, and since warmer weather is in the air I have been testing it out around Palestine.

The first place I took my metal detector was to Davey Dogwood Park in Palestine. I really like this park and it seemed like a great place to start. As soon as we got to the park I grabbed my backpack, metal detector, and shovel then set out on a trail. Within just a a few minutes my metal detector alerted me to some buried treasure.

I got out my shovel and dug into the ground about six inches. There I found an old Budweiser can. The can was not in great shape, but it was interesting to me because I had never see an aluminum can with this type of tab. The tab appears to pull away from the can, rather than pushing down inside of the can when opened.

After every hole I dug, I made sure to cover it back up. This only took a second and I felt like I had cleaned up after myself.

Other objects I found on this treasure hunt include the lid from an old Dr. Pepper can, another can so rusty that it could not be identified, coke tabs, wire, metal tubing, and an old rake. Most everything I found was something left behind from litterbugs! I want to encourage everyone not to litter and to keep East Texas beautiful! If you pack it in you should pack it out.

After about an hour or so of treasure hunting I decided to pack it in and head home. When I got home I  cleaned up my finds in order to get a better look at them. I used my pocket knife to scrape away big chunks of dirt, then I scrubbed all of the pieces in the sink. It only took me about 20 minutes to clean everything up.

I probably won’t keep any of my finds from this trip, but I had a really great time looking treasure hunting. I guess this just goes to show that one man’s trash really is another man’s treasure!

Hopefully my next treasure hunt will yield more than trash. If all goes as planned I will get to treasure hunt on some property in Anderson County where there is believed to have once been a Confederate camp. I am really looking forward to that adventure! Stay tuned to MYETX for my next adventure in East Texas.

See you later, alligators.
